Dermocosmetics: Compare with online retailers and supermarkets

Dermocosmetics accounted for €3.1 billion in pharmacy sales over a 12-month period ending in 2025 (IQVIA), but nearly one-third of parapharmacy sales occur outside of pharmacies (Xerfi). Customers check the prices of brands they’re familiar with, phone in hand. Matching prices everywhere erodes the department’s profit margin; failing to monitor prices creates an image of an expensive pharmacy.

This white paper proposes a method for achieving flawless performance on a short list of benchmark products and accepting a limited margin of error on products where advice makes the difference: two scores per product, four roles, a three-circle comparison matrix, and a price index by role. Figures verified and dated from 2024 to 2026 (IQVIA, Xerfi, Cour des comptes, Ifop, YouGov, Public Health Code).

  • Why customers compare a few products, not your entire section: 59% of French people feel that their spending at pharmacies has increased, but 61% of those who buy cosmetics at pharmacies remain loyal to the products they know
  • How to categorize each item into four roles: shelf markers, featured items, recommended items, and back-of-the-shelf items
  • How does it compare to the same product at big-box stores, online retailers, and competitors?
  • How to Interpret a Price Index by Role, Weighted by Your Sales, and Fund Benchmarks Through Consulting
  • To what extent can a firm justify a price difference, and what does the Code of Ethics—amended in March 2026—allow?
