About a quarter of the products sold by large retailers in France, by value, and half by volume, are now negotiated through European purchasing groups (Senate, report of May 19, 2026). Their strategy is simple: a table that compares prices across countries and demands that prices be aligned with the lowest ones. However, food price levels range from 80 to 122 across the European Union (Eurostat, 2025), and the net price of the brand often accounts for only a small portion of the difference observed on store shelves.
